1911 Canadian Census Online

In 2005, legislation in Canada ended a seven-year battle between the government and the people to make the 1911 census available to researchers. This legislation was good news because not only did it grant the public access to the 1911 census records, but it mandated that all Canadian census returns taken from 1911 through 2001 must be made available to the public ninety-two years after they were compiled. Without that legislation, much of Canada's important census information would have been lost to genealogists and researchers. However, the law also determined that, beginning in 2006, anyone responding to a census will have the opportunity to choose whether or not they want their information released in ninety-two years. That means some important genealogical data could start disappearing after 2006!
